The Uexküll family built this square castellum to guard the harbor at Virtsu around 1460. Three-story round towers with machicolations and battlements rose at the northeast and southwest corners, and the two-story dolomite convent house was decorated with stained glass and colorful tiled stoves. In the Ösel-Wiek feud Bishop Reinhold von Buxhoeveden besieged the castle in 1534, took it, and had it torn down around 1536, calling it a “robbers’ den.”
