In the Middle Ages Matsalu was a working estate of the Ösel–Wiek bishopric. In 1573 it was granted to Claes Åkesson Tott, who had led the Swedish forces at the Battle of Koluvere. After the Great Northern War the Mandelstjernas built up an imposing manor center. The long one-story house with Baroque touches has a center section and two wings that began as separate buildings and were joined in 1867. From 1869 to 1919 the estate belonged to the Hoyningen-Huenes.
