Velise was first recorded in 1264. In the Middle Ages the Uexkülls built a fortified vassal castle here, which Russian troops burned in September 1560 during the Livonian War. In the early 1800s, when the manor belonged to the Wetter-Rosenthals, a classical main house was built from the ruins, reusing the castle’s soundest walls and vaulted cellars. Set on the slope of a hill, the house was one story at the front and two at the back. The Maydells bought the manor in the late 1800s. After a fire in 1888 the house was rebuilt in 1889.
Only a low mound in the large park, topped by a memorial stone to the castle, marks where the castle and the house stood. A few outbuildings survive in altered form.

Good to know
The vassal castle stood on a rise ringed by the looping Aravere brook and a dug moat; parts of the moats survive.
The last owner before 1919 was Bogdan von Maydell.
The Wetter-Rosenthal and Maydell family cemeteries lie in the park and across the Velise River.
