Jäneda Jendel
Jäneda was recorded as a manor in 1510, and its last owners were the von Benckendorffs. Outbuildings of fieldstone and red brick rose in the late 1800s, and in 1915 a castle-like manor house replaced the timber house that had burned in 1902. The last lady of the manor, Maria Zakrevskaya-Benckendorff-Budberg, whose friends included Maxim Gorky and H. G. Wells, is part of cultural history; in 1934 Wells finished the third volume of his memoirs at Jäneda.
