Manor · Järva County
Albu Alp
Albu is first recorded in 1282 as a Livonian Order estate, the oldest manor in Järva County, and remains of a medieval castle survive in its cellar. Around 1740 Robert Archibald Douglas, a former governor of Estonia, built a timber house on a tall stone base. In 1998 restorers found rare baroque and rococo paintings beneath its plaster.

Good to know In the 1710s–1730s owner Magnus Wilhelm von Nieroth ran a “knights’ academy” here for impoverished young nobles. Restorers found extensive baroque and rococo paintings beneath the plaster. A kilometer away, on a gravel hill, stand the ruins of the family’s Gothic Revival burial chapel.
