Tuhala Toal
The early-classical main house was built around 1800 and lavishly rebuilt in the 1880s. After the fire of 1905 it was only partly restored, and in 1938 much of it was sold off as building material. Cartographer Ludwig August Mellin, author of the first atlas of Livonia, was born here.

Good to know Ludwig August Mellin (1754–1835) made the first atlas of Livonia; a memorial stone to him stands in the park. Paul von Lilienfeldt-Toal was deputy governor of St Petersburg and a pioneer of sociology in Tsarist Russia. In this karst country the river runs underground for 1.5 km above the manor, and the nearby Witch’s Well overflows in spring.
