Padise Abbey Padis
Cistercian monks from Dünamünde built a chapel at Padise around 1250, and in 1317 work began on a great fortified monastery. In the 1343 St. George’s Night Uprising it was burned and 28 monks were killed, so building resumed only in the 1370s and the main complex was consecrated in 1448. After the Reformation the von Ramm family lived in it until a fire in 1766 left it in ruins.

Good to know King Erik Menved of Denmark allowed a fortified monastery here in 1305. For nearly 150 years the abbey church served as a two-story residence. It was the first architectural monument in Harju County to be marked in newly independent Estonia.
