Otepää Odenpäh
Otepää’s hill, said to be shaped like a bear’s head, was the center of the Ugandi Estonians and appears in a Russian chronicle as early as 1116. After the 1224 conquest Bishop Hermann of Tartu built one of the first brick castles in the Baltic on its summit. It probably burned during a Livonian Order siege in 1396 and never rose again.

Good to know A bronze hand cannon cast before 1396, among Europe’s oldest firearms, was found here. The same digs found Estonia’s oldest known wind instrument. For a short time Otepää was the seat of the bishopric.
