Mäo Mexhof
In the 1500s Mäo belonged to the Meckes family, who gave it its German name, and in 1635 Queen Christina granted it to the general Lennart Torstenson. A new house rose in the 1700s on the walls of the Baroque one destroyed in the Great Northern War, and in the early 1800s it was lengthened and remodeled in Classicist style with Venetian windows and a four-column portico. The last lady of the manor, Alexandra von Grünewaldt, was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s niece, and the composer spent several summers at Mäo.

Good to know In 1669 Count Andreas Torstenson sold Mäo to Major General Hans von Fersen. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov gave house concerts at Mäo. The Classicist remodeling gave the house three-part Venetian windows.
