The earliest records of Kohala date from 1489, when it belonged to the Wrangells. Later owners included the Lodes, the Tiesenhausens, the Ungern-Sternbergs and the Hastfers, until in 1801 the manor returned to the Wrangells. The timber Historicist main house was completed in the early 1880s to designs by the architect Friedrich Modi. Originally it was one story in the middle and two at the ends; in the 1920s–30s, while it was a school, it was raised to a full two stories.
After expropriation the house was a school for decades. Today the manor is privately owned and runs as a venue for lodging, dining and seminars; the house and grounds have been extensively restored.
