The earliest records of Essu date from 1496, when it belonged to the Wrangells; the Krusensterns followed. In 1840 the manor passed to the Dellingshausens as Carolina von Krusenstern’s dowry. In 1893 the sisters Alexandrine and Julie von Dellingshausen inherited it, and Julie Therese von Ungern-Sternberg bought Essu outright for 165,000 rubles. The one-story classical stone house was built in the 1820s–1830s and remodeled in the Historicist style in 1894 to designs by the architect Friedrich Modi.
