Vastse-Kambja was split off from Suure-Kambja in the 1600s. Its center was laid out half a kilometer west of the church, beside the road to Otepää. The manor belonged to the Stackelbergs, the Rennenkampffs and the Wittes, and from 1868 until expropriation to the Gernhardts. The Classical house, built in the first decades of the 1800s, was originally one story with a tall mezzanine attic floor. A granary and a stable-and-carriage house flanked the forecourt, and a garden temple stood in the small park behind the house.
The house holds the Kambja municipal government; in the 1950s it was raised to a full two stories. The garden temple on the house’s central axis at the back of the park survives, as do the gateposts along the drive, but little remains of the outbuildings.
