Muuga Münkenhof
The manor is named for monks, since the Pirita convent owned it in the Middle Ages. In 1860 it was bought by Carl Timoleon von Neff, a portrait painter to the tsar’s court, who designed an Italianate Neo-Renaissance house himself and painted its halls with his son. A light gray marble staircase in the entrance hall is said to have been a gift from Emperor Alexander II.

Good to know Von Neff’s paintings hang in imperial palaces and churches in St. Petersburg, Moscow and London. After the war the family’s art collection went to the Art Museum of Estonia. A small gatehouse (1873) and a bell tower (1872) still stand.
