Tartu piiskopi vasallid Tödwenid rajasid linnuse arvatavasti 1340. aastal Rõngu jõe kõrgele kaldale, et valvata teede ristumiskohta, kus Tartu maantee hargnes Viljandi ja Riia poole. Umbes 30 × 30 meetri suurust kastelli täiendasid eeslinnus ja väravaehitis, mille teisel korrusel asus 1413 mainitud Püha Risti kabel. Gotthard Kettleri väed vallutasid ja purustasid linnuse 1558 pärast viienädalast piiramist ning jesuiidid lasid selle 1625 õhku.

Täna Lossimäe lõunatipul on alles pealinnuse kirdesein.

The Tödwen family, vassals of the Bishop of Tartu, probably built this castle in 1340 on the high bank of the Rõngu River to guard the crossroads where the Tartu road split toward Viljandi and Riga. The castellum, about 30 by 30 meters, gained an outer bailey and a gatehouse with the Chapel of the Holy Cross, recorded in 1413, on its upper floor. Gotthard Kettler’s forces took and wrecked it in 1558 after a five-week siege, and in 1625 the Jesuits blew it up.

Today The northeast wall of the main castle survives on the southern tip of Castle Hill.
