Mäetaguset mainiti esmakordselt 1542 ja see kuulus Virumaa suurimate mõisate hulka. Põhjasõjas 1703 mõis põletati ning 1738 läks see von Rosenitele; maanõunik Otto Fabian von Rosen koostas 1739 kurikuulsa Roseni deklaratsiooni, mis kinnitas talupoegade õigusetust. Kahekorruseline varaklassitsistlik peahoone valmis 1796 ja ehitati 19. sajandil ümber.

Täna Peahoone kuulub Alutaguse vallale; endises tallis-tõllakuuris tegutseb hotell.

Mäetaguse was first recorded in 1542 and was among the largest estates in Virumaa. It was burned in 1703 during the Great Northern War, and in 1738 it passed to the von Rosens; Land Councilor Otto Fabian von Rosen drew up the notorious Rosen Declaration of 1739, which affirmed the peasants’ lack of rights. The two-story Early Classicist main house was finished in 1796 and rebuilt in the 1800s.

Today The main house belongs to Alutaguse Parish; the former stable and coach house is now a hotel.
