Elistvere was one of the oldest estates in the area, on record as early as 1355, and passed from the Ungerns to the Wrangells and then the Stackelbergs. In 1785 Reinhold von Stackelberg raised a huge Late Baroque mansion on a tall plinth beneath a steep hip roof, counted among the grandest in Estonia. It was torn down in the 1930s, and today lynx and bears roam the old park.

Today Nothing of the house remains; a nine-arched granary survives, and the park is home to the Elistvere Animal Park.

History

First recorded 1355 – the Bishop of Tartu granted it as a fief to Gerd von Edlenkerken
