Otto von Lilienfeld, owner of neighboring Sikeldi, bought Alu in 1858 and tore down the old buildings with their medieval cellars. In their place, between 1862 and 1875, rose a massive Gothic Revival castle with a five-story corner tower and a crenellated roofline. After years as a school and a farm-machinery depot, it passed to the Estonian Defense League.

Today The Estonian Defense League acquired the castle in 1999 and restored it as its training center.
