Mõis sai nime munkade järgi, sest keskajal kuulus see Pirita kloostrile.

The manor is named for monks, since the Pirita convent owned it in the Middle Ages. In 1860 it was bought by Carl Timoleon von Neff, a portrait painter to the tsar’s court, who designed an Italianate Neo-Renaissance house himself and painted its halls with his son. A light gray marble staircase in the entrance hall is said to have been a gift from Emperor Alexander II.

Today The house is a school, and its painted halls and marble staircase survive.
