The small manor of Kõrgessaare was founded in the 1500s by Perwoy Putilov, a Russian boyar who had gone over to the Swedes. In 1624 the De la Gardies established the manor here together with a harbor that kept up regular sailings to Stockholm. The one-story wooden Baroque main house was probably built in the late 1700s. The estate later belonged to the Stenbocks and the Ungern-Sternbergs. Left unused, the house collapsed in the 1950s and 1960s, and its ruins were cleared in 1972.

Today The 1880 distillery, the granary and the steward’s house, now a library, survive.
